One Month Ahead
Set up a calendar for your move.
- If your employer helps pay moving expenses, confirm what is
expected of you.
- Decide what goes with you and what to sell or give away.
Perhaps hold a Garage Sale. Finalize arrangements with your moving
company.
- Begin packing seldom used items that you are taking with you.
Two Weeks Before You Move: o Clear up outstanding accounts.
- Arrange disconnect\connect dates with local utilities at your
current home and your new one.
- Begin serious packing of items you can do without over the
next two weeks.
- Send out Change of Address cards and leave a forwarding
address with the Post Office.
- Arrange for pet travel. o Dispose of flammable liquids such as
spray paints, solvents and gas in lawn mowers in an
environmentally safe manner.
Moving Day
- Confirm arrival time with moving company.
- Keep important documents and keys handy.
- Make a final inspection to be sure nothing is forgotten in
closets, attic, basement and garage.
- Turn off lights; close and lock windows and doors.
- Leave keys and garage door openers with your real estate agent
or landlord.
- Leave home only after the moving truck is on its way to your
new home.
Moving In
- Meet the movers promptly.
- Supervise placement of cartons and furnishings.
- Check circuit breakers or fuse box to be sure everything is on.
- Test all appliances and test hot and cold water.
- Make sure all pilot lights are burning.
- Check batteries on smoke detectors.
- Make sure all the telephone jacks are working and your phone service is
on.
- Introduce yourself to your neighbors.
